  Verwarrende Zomer in Pool 120
CURATOR X

DEPRESSIE PROMOTIE CENTRUM

“ //SUDDEN EXPOSURE.. .” is a project of Stella Kostova. It consists of three parts (act I-act II-act III), the second part of which is going to be presented in the Polish Art Gallery POOL120 on March 2, Friday, 2007.

When did it all start?

I had this idea to organize an art exhibition that was based on “text”. To work with something that is visually so weak. I was fascinated. Everyday I would come up with dozen of ideas. All very different, but only just that little bit closer to what I really wanted to achieve.

Where was act I presented?

The first months were spent on research. Everything I was reading, every journal of a friend, every article in a magazine or news paper, every single sign on the street would make me imagine the visual expression of the information behind it. All the books I once read came back to mind, transformed like shapeless monsters that had to somehow be presented in an art gallery. Nothing made sense but I was obsessed. That stage was “act I”. It was presented at home and in front of my friends.

What is “//sudden exposure…” all about?

The project is about transmission of ideas, from the artist to the public. However, this time with a little bit of a twist. Artists usually use the visual language to present the ideas behind their work. The medium of the artwork has been an important part of that process. However I decided that I wanted to see if those ideas are possible to be presented in a text. Think about it- an art exhibition that you can only imagine. An art piece that you can make complete only in your head based on the information the artist is making available to you. In that time I started to read Chuang Tzu and decided to use a quote of his for the promotion of the project.

In the beginning did you have a clear idea of what you wanted to say with this project?

There is no clear message I want to pass on. I don’t think it is necessary as well. I will be happy if the project succeeds as an experiment. We will make the whole process of making that final stage (act III-the book) transparent. There will be discussions between the artists every week and people are welcome to be part of that if they are interested.

Why did you name it “//sudden exposure…” ?

I will leave this open for interpretations.

How many artist you wanted to present with this project?

In the beginning I had in mind about 20. And most of them were writers. I would pick up the writings of friends like TJ Lee Williams, or just favorite writers like Daniil Kharms or Victor Pelevin or Ina Grigorova. Later on I realized it wasn’t going to work. In that time I decided to ask visual artists to participate in the project.

How did you meet the artists involved?

Jessica Worden, Matthijs van Zessen and Bart v.d. Mark I knew from the academy. The most recent project we made together was “The early work” during the “Wereld van Witte de With” festival. Mattijs Mallens and I met on the Internet. Nicolas Zimny I met at an opening for the Polish gallery. And Sanne van Gent is in her last year at the academy. That’s how we met.

Did they all agree to participate?

Yes.

At which stage did you decide to make an art exhibition as well?

It has been on my mind from the beginning. I knew it would be an important part of the project because it would give us the possibility to experiment and question each other.

Is the exhibition an important part of the project?

It is. We want to get as much feed back as possible .To make the public part of every stage of the project

Why the Polish gallery?

I have been working with Jarek and Harmen in the past. There is something anarchistic about this project and also something anarchistic about the gallery. It was the right place for us.

When can we expect the final stage (act III) of the project?

The book “//Sudden exposure…” will be lounged at the last week of March.

What other projects are you working on at the moment?

I've been asked to curate an exhibition in the national art gallery of Bulgaria, Sofia in October this year. It is a solo exhibition of Bulgarian/Dutch artist Rositza Stanisjeva.

For all of you who didn't make it to the opening...well done.
(there were way too many people that we said hello to).

We meet there every week.To see each other, and to see you.
The gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays from 19:00 until we-decide.
Saturdays and Sundays from 15:00 until "same" time.

We are not that friendly during the days.
But you can try and make an appointment. You better have a good excuse for that.

that's all for now

Kisses,

Luv,

"..And I've been drifting along in the same stale old shoes

Loose ends tyin' a noose in the back of my mind

If you thought that you were making your way

To where the puzzles and pagans lay

Put it together, it's a strange invitation.. "
